Hello everyone,
Today, I wanted to add the Wiki articles in the taxon links on iNaturalist. Unfortunately, I was only able to link to the forum posts as I can only format the species and genus in the URL. I'd like to add links to the articles as they're of good quality and well illustrated, which isn't the case of many articles. Therefore, I'd like to ask if it's possible to modify the URL format.
Currently, the URL to a wiki article looks like that:
https://www.openflora.ch/fr/wiki/fraisier-des-indes-duchesnea-indica-potentilla-indica-2747.html
It would be great if it could be changed to something like this (with the current POWO name in the URL, if possible):
https://www.openflora.ch/fr/wiki/potentilla-indica.html
Thanks in advance!
Nicolas

Hi Nicolas,
That would be great if Open Flora articles could be added to iNaturalist!
Yes, I’m aware that the URLs of the wiki articles (from the systematic and thematic backbones) aren’t very intuitive. The number at the end of the URL is essential — it allows us to change a species or taxon name without running into issues with synonyms, etc. As long as we keep that number unchanged, the URL will still point to the same taxon, even if we modify the name in the backend.
However, I believe there should be a way to create alias URLs using just the POWO name. None of us can implement that directly in the backend, but we’ll reach out to the platform developer and ask. We also have a few other questions and some bugs that need to be resolved soon...
I’ll keep you updated as soon as we know more.
Very best, Muriel

AntwortenGood news!
We now have intuitive alias URLs for all existing wiki articles that include the POWO names of the taxa.
These alias URLs are automatically added at the end of each wiki article and look like this, for example:
https://www.openflora.ch/de/wiki/orobanche beauverdii (DE)
https://www.openflora.ch/fr/wiki/orobanche beauverdii (FR)
https://www.openflora.ch/it/wiki/orobanche beauverdii (IT)
The alias URLs also work with synonyms. For example, Picris echioides (according to Info Flora) is listed as Helminthotheca echioides in POWO. The URL can include both names, separated by a comma, but each name also works on its own. All versions lead to the same wiki article:
https://www.openflora.ch/de/wiki/picris echioides,helminthotheca echioides
https://www.openflora.ch/de/wiki/picris echioides
https://www.openflora.ch/de/wiki/helminthotheca echioides
→ They all redirect to the same page.
As part of a future development step, each wiki article will also include a proper footer showing the authorship, the version date of the article, and the alias URL.

AntwortenTo me it seems to be more worthwhile to ask the Inaturalist admins to allow freeform links. Most sites don't have page links like the ones you want.

AntwortenAsking iNat is a good idea, but having intuitive alias URLs on one’s own website is better ;-)
We didn’t implement the alias URLs in this development step just because of iNat. We did it because we wanted intuitive alias URLs for Open Flora. This way, the URLs are “predictable” for everyone.
